Why is it Called Arkayne Beta?

You may have noticed a small word in superscript next to our logo on the new Arkyane website: “beta”. It is almost a matter of course for new web applications to be labeled as being “beta” these days. This trend was popularized by Google, who famously kept its Gmail service in beta for five years. But what does beta really mean? Google and other companies certainly have their own rationales. Here’s ours:

Beta is a solicitation for feedback

We value user input. An company like our relies on users to help us with new ideas, offer constructive criticism, and even submit reports of obscure bugs while we build Arkayne. After many months of being at point-blank range, sometimes we lose sight of the forest among all these trees. Users help us take a reflective step back. You can improve Arkayne by contacting us — we would love to hear from you!

Beta is a request for forbearance

Software is difficult to write, especially software written on a large scale. That is not an excuse for bugs, but might explain why, on occasion, you might notice a service outage or some unexpected behavior with the Arkayne plugin. By being in beta, we are asking for your patience as we work these things out. In the future, we will have more formal notifications of planned downtime and a more complete feature set.

Beta is a sign of more great things to come

Ultimately, beta is a commitment to continual improvement. It is the first stage in our effort to make relevance linking the lingua franca of text-based websites. In the coming months you will see a lot of changes here at Arkayne. With a new website and a new office, new products and features are not far behind.  Rest assured we don’t plan on being in beta for as long as Gmail was.
