Using Social Networks

Over the past few years, Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter have become the best way to reach new customers and build brand loyalty.  As a result, marketing teams have taken notice and are always trying to use social media in new and innovative ways.  In the past, the most important target market has been the 18-35, however this has begun to shift to a younger age range, Generation Y in particular.  Why? today teens are spending more money and have more influence than ever.  With this new foes on social networks, it is no coincidence that 96% of Generation Y has joined a social network.

This week I saw one of the most innovative uses of social networking to date, and unless you have been under a rock you watched at least a half dozen of the “old Spice” personalized video responses.  As we have talked about numerous times, for marketers, the main goal of social media is to interact with your fan base and attract new customers without trying to sell to them.  In the past many did this by providing information with videos and blogs, but Old Spices use of personalized responses from their spokesman achieved more traction in a shorter period of time for a number of reasons.  Not only were people talking about this campaign on these networks, but it also gave them a reason to talk about it more in hopes of getting a response.  Also, the responses were actually really funny and original.

Once this campaign took hold, it attracted a number of different celebrities including Ellen Degeneres, Alyssa Milano, Perez Hilton, and even popular tech websites like Gizmodo and G4tv.com  This is a perfect example of how a company can do something funny, interesting, fresh, and stir up a lot of buzz with just a few writers, a video camera.  Also, I have to give props to maybe the hardest working man in Hollywood these past few days, Isaiah Mustafa who had to hang around on set in a towel pretty much all day and night.

Here are a few of our favorites.
